The super popular Askelviikot event starts in September – join OLL’s Student Series!

The Finnish Student Sports Federation OLL and the Finnish Workers’ Sports Federation TUL want to encourage university students to get moving in September. This year’s Askelviikot (Step Weeks), taking place 7–20.9, will end on UNESCO’s International Day of University Sport, when university sports are celebrated all over the world.

The Askelviikot event is an excellent way to challenge your friends or even your whole student association to get more active in their day-to-day lives through a playful competition. Participants compete in the number of daily steps taken, but more important than the winning result is illustrating how small daily choices can impact everyday activity levels and wellbeing.

“We tested out a Student Series as part of last year’s Askelviikot, and it’s great to see this campaign continuing! This year it is easier than ever to join in through the challenge website Liikkeelle!, and there is no maximum team size. This means that an entire year group or student association can take part as one large team,” Janne Suur-Hamari, event and administrative coordinator at TUL, says.

According to the Finnish Student Health and Wellbeing Survey, university students sit on average 11 hours per day. Our goal is to encourage students to move more in their daily lives and during the new academic year through small choices. Things like walking short distances and taking the stairs instead of the elevator add movement and increase the daily step count without you even noticing.

“It’s great to see that the Student Series is coming back at this year’s Askelviikot! Even though students can increase their own activity levels by making good choices, university communities must also be environments that support incidental exercise. These kinds of communal campaigns create a shared goal to increase physical activity,” says Martta Sopanen, President of OLL.

UNESCO’s International Day of University Sports IDUS takes place on 20.9.
