Late registration for the SELL Student Games is ongoing

Municipal solutions: Local exercise as part of a functional city
Published:Cities and municipalities have a key role to play in determining the opportunities people have to do exercise in their everyday life. Exercise does not have to be limited to separate workout sessions or gym visits: it is easy to adopt an active lifestyle if the urban environment supports walking, cycling and local exercise. Especially for students, who often have limited resources and schedules, accessible opportunities for exercise are important, writes OLL’s 1st Vice President, Nette Rimpioja.

These elections are indeed an important celebration of democracy for Finns, who get to choose the politicians who make decisions on almost all the basic services of everyday life. OLL launched its election campaign by getting the candidates moving
Published:The Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) launched its county and municipal election campaign at the outdoor gym in Otaniemi, Espoo on 5th March. The Federation is offering up four solutions to promote physical activity among students and all residents. At the launch event exercise was used to illustrate these solutions.

Hundreds of athletes expected at the international SELL Student Games in Vierumäki
Published:The traditional SELL Student Games hosted in turns by Finland and the Baltic countries are expected to attract hundreds of students from dozens of universities around the world. Universiade medal record kicks off our year of international competitions and meetings

In addition to the World University Games and the European Universities Championships, the year of international university sports also includes the General Assemblies of our umbrella organisations.

New study shows that students exercise more than before, but there is no reduction in sitting
Published:According to the Finnish Student Health and Wellbeing Survey (KOTT), which was published in November, 55 percent of university students exercise enough according to the physical activity recommendations. Exercise promotion is, however, still needed. Marika Uusi-Illikainen, OLL’s Vice President for 2024, summarises the research results and discusses how student sports can be improved going forward.

Apply for the European Universities Championships 2025
Published:The European Universities Championships are held every two years in connection with the multi-sport event European Universities Games and every two years as separate European Championships. 2025 will be the year of the European Championships. The Games also offer a great opportunity to test the level of European elite sports, as many national team-level athletes will be taking part in them. The athletes will represent their own higher education institution in the Games.

OLL on the VAT rate increase: What will happen to physical activity when students are already skimping on medicine?
Published:Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL) demands that the VAT rate increase of sports services be abandoned. The Government’s proposal being deliberated by Parliament would increase the VAT rate of sports services from 10 per cent to 14 per cent. The increase in VAT rate – and consequently in service prices – is implemented in a situation where more than half of university students are exercising too little (THL 2021).
