The annual SELL Games start today in Riga
Finland is sending a team of nearly forty athletes to the Games to be held in Riga, Latvia, on May 22–24.
Every year, the SELL Student Games bring together hundreds of students from Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania to compete in as many as 14 different sports. Now in their 41st year, the Games are one of the oldest student sports events in Europe.
This time, Finnish athletes will compete in soccer, basketball, powerlifting, orienteering, and swimming. In addition to the 36 athletes, a delegation from the Finnish Student Sports Federation will also be attending the Games, including President Martta Sopanen, Vice President Jenny Tynkkynen, Board member Rolands Jansons, and Training Specialist Markku Rantahalvari.
“It is great to be able to familiarize ourselves with the international student sports culture and to see how they have organized the Games in Latvia. After all, sports are best enjoyed in person, so it is fantastic to go and cheer the Finnish athletes on to perform at their best,” says Tynkkynen, who was part of the organizing team for last year’s SELL Games.
The event was held in Finland last year after a nine-year break.
OLL wishes the entire Finnish team good luck and success in the Games!
