Minister for Sports Mika Poutala to OLL: “Physical activity must be made more affordable for students”

On 11 September, Minister for Youth, Sport and Physical Activity Mika Poutala attended MetroSport, a student sports and wellbeing event in Helsinki. He was interviewed under the basketball hoop at Kisahalli by Akseli Haanpää, President of the Finnish Student Sports Federation (OLL).

How should student physical activity be increased, according to the minister? Poutala turned the question back to the students and OLL, whom he regards as experts in the field. Nevertheless, he pointed out several measures to promote exercise.

He referred to a school visit where all desks were height-adjustable, allowing students to take movement breaks during lectures. He also emphasised the importance of peer support: students should find peers and groups that inspire others to exercise, and these active students should be rewarded.

Costs of participation are also a concern, he added.

"Sports and exercise must be made more affordable for students. It cannot come down to whether you can afford it or not", said Poutala.

Challenging student financial aid reform

OLL praised Poutala for defending funding for sports facilities during the government’s budget negotiations, where he successfully opposed cuts proposed by the Ministry of Finance. The government also decided to increase the student meal subsidy.

As Minister for Youth, Poutala is also responsible for student financial aid, currently undergoing a major reform. He admitted the process is difficult, as it must not increase state expenditure. He underlined two guiding principles.

"I hope financial aid can encourage young people to focus more on studying, while also removing obstacles for those who wish to support themselves in other ways", Poutala said.

At MetroSport, students challenged minister Mika Poutala (in the middle) to a free-throw contest. The former speed skater proved his accuracy, outperforming project manager Jonna Oskarsson (on the left) and OLL Chair Akseli Haanpää.
