Advisors’ recommendations for increased activity and improved ability to study in university communities

To increase movement which improves the ability to study and work requires cross-cutting collaboration, and that the universities commit to improving this on both leadership and practical levels. Jussi Ansala, OLL’s Senior Special Advisor for University Sport, and Pekka Tiitinen and Saara Blomqvist, Senior Advisors for the University on the Move programme, collated factors which impact the ability to study in a recent article in LIITO magazine.

Summary and recommendations for increased activity and improved ability to study in university communities

  • Write down the goals and measures for increasing movement in the strategic documents, pedagogic plans and syllabuses.
  • Define the responsibilities and resources, including students’ peer roles, using the Moving for a better study ability model.
  • Include pedagogy which takes breaks from teaching and increases movement in all fields, including remote learning, and systematically use technology.
  • Build versatile, accessible spaces which make it easy and natural to change position and enable moments of movement.
  • Support active travel to the university.
  • Direct solutions to students who don’t exercise a lot in collaboration with FSHS and the wellbeing services county.
  • Carry out an annual assessment of the current situation by filling out OLL’s University on the Move scorecard; report on the results to management and staff, and link the development activities to clear indicators.
  • Visibly and repeatedly communicate to students about low-threshold opportunities.
